Mary Ann Naokwegijig-Corbiere attended school where she grew up, Wikwemikong on Manitoulin Island, until Grade 8. Most “Wiky kids” then spoke Nishnaabemwin; they used English only with teachers. After graduating from York University, her desire to be among Nishnaabemwin speakers full-time again took her back home for a few years. In 1987, she agreed to teach an evening class on her language at the University of Sudbury, a challenge she unexpectedly found tremendously enjoyable. She has taught the language as a full-time faculty member in Indigenous Studies there since 1989. In 2007, obtained a doctorate. She continues working on instructional resources for adult learners.
